Lent is here, and Alexandria and I are pleased to offer daily reflections for you from Ash Wednesday through Holy Thursday. Students, faculty, staff, administration, alumni, and friends of SFC have all made contributions to this project, and we are excited to see how it will bring our community together during this season.
La Verna |
The name of this
project comes from an important place in St. Francis’ life. La Verna is a
mountain in Tuscany where he would retreat for reflection and prayer. The
hermitage on the mountain is also known as La Verna. William Short tells us that “[i]t was to this hermitage that Francis withdrew two
years before his death, to spend a forty-day ‘Lent’ in late August and
September of 1224. And there, according to his companion and secretary, Brother
Leo, Francis received the vision of a Seraph and the stigmata revealed at the
time of his death.” This was clearly a special place for Francis where he could
be with God and pray deeply in the Spirit.
We hope that this booklet
will be a prayerful addition to your season of Lent. The majority of the
reflections are from the Christian perspective, but there are some
contributions from the Jewish and Muslim perspectives as well. We look forward
to seeing how this project will bring our community together as we make an
inward journey to La Verna each day.
